MEDCTK02 RENEGADE

                            by Tom Konczal

Background: As a result of the Desert Storm Victory, Mohammar
Khadafy has renounced the coalition that brought the defeat of
Saddam Hussein's Iraq and has vowed to avenge his Arab brothers.
With the nuclear technology purchased from Pakistan, he has
managed to put together a nuclear device. Lacking a proper
triggering device and delivery system, he has asked for
volunteers for a suicide mission. The Foxtrot submarine Al Fetah
has volunteered to deliver the device to a foreign military
instillation and detonate it there. It was last seen in the Gulf
Of Sidra. There is no total victory conditions in this game.
The coalition minimum victory is to sink the Al Fetah. The
Libyan minimum victory is to remain adjacent to its target port
for 15 minutes to arm and detonate the bomb.

COALITION BACKGROUND and ORDERS

The C.I.A. has gotten wind of this project and has narrowed
the likely targets to one of eight coalition bases:
Marseille - French Fleet base
La Maddalena - U.S. submarine base
Naples - U.S. fleet base
Sigonella - U.S. Fleet base and P-3 airbase
Brindisi - Italian Fleet base
Port Said - entrance to the Suez Canal
Haifa - lifelong enemy city
Tel Aviv - lifelong enemy city

All of these must be defended. The French will have a Rubis
Class SSN guard the area between the south Sardinian coast and
Tunisia. The Clemenceau CVBG will patrol the triangle between
Marseille, Sardinia and Palma. One or two Sturgeon class
submarines at La Maddalena will move to and patrol the chokepoint
between Sicily and Tunisia. The Saratoga CVBG, now at Naples,
will move south, patrolling the approaches to Naples in the
Tyrrhennian Sea and passing around the western side of Sicily to
converge on Sigonella. The two frigates at Sigonella will
provide an ASW barrier for that base until the arrival of the
CVBG. The P3 Orions will assist in barrier patrol.
The Italians have a Sauro class submarine on patrol in the
Ionian Sea and will use the Garibaldi task group and a Toti class
submarine to block the strait between Italy and Albania. The
Egyptians have a Romeo class submarine and Descubierta class
frigate covering the approaches to Port Said. The Israelis have
a Saar patrol craft group and a Vickers submarine covering their
western shore between the two cities. A U.S. Sturgeon class
submarine in the Eastern Mad will assist in this direction. The
Iowa Battleship group, currently off the Lebanese shore, will
sail southwest to assist in the search. You have "weapons free"
and the sub MUST BE FOUND AND SUNK.

LIBYAN ORDERS

Khadafy (the computer) has chosen one of the eight targets
for you. Use the ALT-T key option to check the path given for
your submarine and then head for that base. You may choose any
path you wish Running you sub onto the shore at the base for 15
minutes will be enough to secure victory. You have only 4 days
to complete your assignment so good luck.

Allah Akbar!!

MEDCTK2A postulates the exact same scenario with a renegade
Russian captain in a Victor II submarine with nuclear cruise
device aboard. Better submarine - more capable in stealth and
self protection.
