Oriskany Airwing Composition

Postby Buddha » Mon Mar 26, 2012 9:26 pm

Any old timers here who recall the number and types of AC carried aboard the Oriskany in the late '60s/early '70s?

I found this :http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/ordbat.htm, which gives the squadrons, dets, and AC types, but I'm stuck for numbers of each type carried aboard.

I spent time alongside Oriskany numerous times in those days, but never actually served aboard her.

Thanx,

Yeah, you can get the detachment names and aircraft types at:

http://ussoriskany.com/id33.html

along with the cruise logs at:

http://navysite.de/cv/cv34.htm

In my experience, I have also had difficulty in determining exact numbers of aircraft / squadron and have just had to guesstimate as best I can. I do find it odd that such numbers are so hard to locate.

Thanx for the link. Some interesting stuff, but unfortunately no numbers, at least not the ones I was looking for.

Nobody seems to remember this stuff. I was an AIC and SAC on the Midway for 2 years and dealt with the air wing every day, and still had to search for numbers of AC in each squadron.

Maybe some maintenance type will read this. Those guys probably remember every detail of the squadron composition.

Are you working on a scenario? If so, care to share any details?

I wrote one that hasn't been released yet based upon a USN response to the Pueblo incident.

I just noticed Oriskany available in the DB, so I'm thinking of something based at Yankee Station and some land targets of some sort.

Freek Schepers wrote one with Oriskany, if you care to try it:

Operation Jaya Wijaya
Guinea.SCN

I also wrote another (unpublished) one with CV-34. Let me know if you want to help me test it.

Sure, where do I get the files? It should help me with details of the airwing composition and the escorts, many of who's names escape me as well.

I'm not totally sure what to give you as test results, but I'll do the best I can.

Freek's scenario is already included with the publicly released files.

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you my unpublished scenario directly. Which version do you want? The H3, ANW, or HUE edition? I have only tested in H3.
